Is Rivers a Top 5 QB?

Where does Philip Rivers stand among other quarterbacks in the league?

  • Passing Yards #9
  • Passing Touchdowns #8
  • Passer Rating #3
  • Completions #8

Pretty nice rankings for a QB in a run first offense. But those numbers don’t tell the whole truth. Rivers also completes 67% of his passes. That’s more than Brees, Manning, McNabb, Bulger, and just about any other top tier quarterback in the NFL.

So when you add all this up, including some intangibles, where does Rivers rank among other quarterbacks? In my opinion he is playing in a top 5 or maybe even top 3 level right now. Watching Rivers is like watching the second coming of Montana. The way he moves his feet in the pocket and checks down his receivers is well above any quarterback in his year. Keep in mind this technically Rivers first full season as an NFL QB. I guess all those years behind Brees paid off.

What sticks out the most is Philip’s 99.7% QB rating, currently second in the NFL behind Peyton Manning. One can make an arguement that Rivers is possibly the number 3 quarterback in the NFL right now, behind only Peyton and Tom Brady. Brees is playing extremely well right now. He leads the NFL in yards and completions. However, his completion percentage and touchdown to interception ratio are worse than Rivers.

In my opinion, Rivers is definetly a Top 5 quarterback right now, and could be a superstar for the next 7-8 years.
