Should Rivers be more Mobile?
Are we in the age of the mobile quarterback? Mike Vick, Daunte Culpepper (pre-injury), Donovan McNabb, Vince Young… the list goes on. Teams like mobile QBs, right? In 16 starts last season, Philip Rivers only had 48 rushing attempts for 49 yards. Not what you would call mobile.
If the media and everyone is so hyped on mobile QBs, then why are the top 5 QBs in the league not mobile. You won’t see Manning run, either will Brady. You think Carson Palmer will take off running? Nope. How about Marc Bulger?
Philip Rivers is in the same mobility class as the above mentioned QBs. They don’t take off running. Rivers is definitiely a top 10 QB in the NFL and will only continue to improve. But is his mobility factor something he needs to work on?
I don’t think so. Having pocket presence is more important. Being able to move in the pocket (not outside the pocket) makes a great QB.
