Should the Chargers lock up Rivers now?
Philip Rivers is currently under contract through 2009. Sure that sounds like a long time, but if the Chargers believe Rivers can be their franchise QB for the next 7-8 years, shouldn’t they lock him up in an extension now while the price is cheaper?
If Rivers had a Pro Bowl season or wins a couple playoff games, that price tag is only going to go up. Having a premier QB in the NFL is priceless, and I think the Chargers have that in Rivers. He went 14-2 in his first year as a starter.
They need to get him locked through at least 2011 (that’s how long Tomlinson is under contract). I say give him a 3 year extension and roll with it. Who else are you going to get? Culpepper?
