Rivers & The Chargers Head to Tennessee
Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers started the season 1-3, but are now 7-5 and sitting atop the AFC West division. They head to Nashville this weekend to face the hungry Tennessee Titans. The Titans are a tough team, but have been on the downslide the past few weeks.
A lot of the Chargers players feel like they got screwed with a tough schedule this year. Well guess what guys? If you go 14-2, then the NFL will give you a hard schedule the following year. That’s how it’s always been.
“It’s not even close,” quarterback Philip Rivers said. “That’s not an excuse, but that just shows how tough it is week in and week out to do what you want to do.”
The Chargers have won 2 in a row, and I think they’ll beat the Titans this week. Rivers just needs to manage them game and get the ball to his two best players, Tomlinson and Gates. Something like 180 yards 1 td and 1 int seem on par for this game.

I thought this was supposed to be a Philip Rivers fan site…of late it sure does seem to be more of a place for criticism, insults and derogatory comments. I hope this reaches you before any posts about the Titans game. I’ve followed Philip since the day he walked onto the field at Carter Finley Stadium as a freshman for NC State. He is a good quarterback! Hopefully he will have a long and successful career in the NFL as well. I acknowledge this season hasn’t been his best but let’s give the guy a break - he’s only in his second season as the starter and he’s had to adjust to practically a whole new coaching staff this season as well. He’s ONE player on an eleven man team. He can’t do much of anything if the O-line doesn’t protect him. Recievers have to catch the balls that come their way (there have been any number of catchable balls that he has thrown that recievers have dropped or missed). Yesterday against Tennessee he didn’t have a great game but he got hurt, came back to play and actually led them to the victory. His numbers don’t look good but he displayed courage and guts. He’s a competitive player and he plays with emotion (I don’t blame him for telling the crowd to shut up when they booed - that was uncalled for). How about this fan site being a little bit more supportive of him and encouarging to him? Maybe he doesn’t throw it to Gates becuase Gates is double-covered. Maybe he doesn’t need to throw it but 10-20 times when the running game is working. Both of those instances were critical remarks made about his performance in the KC game. Yes, he’s thrown interceptions and yes he’s been sacked and lost the ball. Again, we’re back to the O-line play. His talents as a QB are not in scrambling - that’s just the type of QB he is but that doesn’t mean he can’t be effective and a good QB. He’s not out there calling the plays himself either - he’s calling the plays that are coming in from the coaches. Let’s hold the new coaching staff (a head coach with a losing record as a head coach at that) to some accountability. It was amazing that Philip was a pro-bowl player in his first season as a starter. Let’s be realistic about our expectations - I’m afraid that the bar was set too high last year for this year. Peyton Manning was a QB for several years before he became a Super Bowl QB. The comments on Philip’s play on this website have been too critical and derogatory. The “predictions” of how many yards passing he’ll get and number of completions and number of interceptions are insulting. I don’t imagine he even looks at this website but I stand by my comment - if this is a fan site for Philip Rivers then it needs to be more supportive of him and just state the facts if you want to post his stats from a game - there don’t have to be editorial comments that are critical and insulting and degrading. Any comments as have been made about his previous performances that are made about the Titans game are below the belt and uncalled for. This may be the last time I visit this website unless there’s a noticeable change in tone. I challenge all true Philip Rivers fans to be more supportive and check unrealistic expectations of him (and the Chargers team as a whole) at the door. The NFL is different every year - teams that are good one year are crap the next and vice versa (just look at the Bears and the Packers). I too had grand hopes for the Chargers this season after last year’s 14-2 season but very early on I came to realize I had to adjust my expectations. Repeats are rare in the NFL of the 21st century. Give Philip a chance - he is and will be a really good (maybe even great) quarterback.
