It is thought and also believed that the Chargers could be soon pulling their trigger in extending the contract of coach Norv Turner. His contract is going to be expired in 2010 season end.

Norv Turner was under considerable heat at the time when Chargers struggled to a 2-3 start. He had has directed the club to three AFC West titles and also an AFC Championship Game appearance. He replaced Marty Schottenheimer in 2007 before the season started.

Regarding him Philip Rivers said, “I think as he’s done really every year, the steadiness, the never-flinch leadership and attitude that he coaches with has allowed us to bounce back from 2-3 and stay on the ground, enjoying an (11-game) win streak.”

He also said that Norv Turner shows his strength in staying the course even if the club venture off it.

He added further, “We never get too much on a high or too much on a low… It’s a steady, grounded, focused approach. It starts with him — he and the staff — the week-to-week game plans giving us a chance to succeed. I think, ultimately, the guys have to soak that in and put in the effort preparing. I think that’s been the biggest reason why we’ve played so well.”

Rivers also has blossomed under the guidance of Norv Turner.

Rivers says each team has different circumstances and approaches

When Philip Rivers was asked last Wednesday, December the 31st, by the media that what happened on Sunday in the Indianapolis Sunday and what is his take on how much he should play Sunday then he replied: “I think it’s obviously up to each individual team and each team has different circumstances and approaches. We’ve been told, and I’m sure Norv will fill you in with whatever info he sees necessary, to prepare like a regular week and for everybody to be ready to play four quarters.”

Philips also added that how they will be playing is not sure, but according to him if he and the team go and prepare and get a week better and keep the approach consistent then they would have the last 10 weeks. Moreover, it will be the team’s best interest and give themselves the best chance to improve.

When further Rivers was asked what is his personal feeling for the best then he replied that he is preparing to play four quarters. He added, “I think any time you suit up, you want to go win the game.”

Media also asked whether he will be carrying the December success to January then Rivers said that they take a great deal of pride in the fact that the team has won eighteen in a row in December.

Rivers have confidence in his team

Quarterback Philip Rivers’ December record was to 16-0, completing 21 of 32 passes for 272 yards. The Chargers defeated Dallas by 20-17 and won their eighth consecutive game.

Let us check what Rivers discussed with Clifton Brown from Sporting News in the empty locker room after the match.

Brown asked Rivers about how big was the 7-minute fourth quarter drive which gave him a 10-point lead. To this Rivers said that it was a playoff-type drive and players make it in use all their timeouts and after this kick a field goal. This is what, Rivers mentioned further, players want to do always against good teams on the road.

Brown further went on with his question and asked Rivers that he scored on the drive in which he got his neck injured by DeMarcus Ware, so what did Rivers say to his team after the injury of Ware.

To this Rivers answered that not a single player on the field ever likes seeing any player go down in a serious nature. He also added that one needs to switch off from the caring part to football.

Brown also asked about Rivers’ confidence in his team always as it was seen now. To this Rivers said that it is always easy to say this is the best team. He continued, “But this is as zeroed in and grounded as we’ve ever been on a streak.”

Rivers played like Super Bowl champ

In the past six weeks it was seen that Philip Rivers played like a Super Bowl champ. In the period he had gone 6-0 to catapult the Chargers to the top of the AFC West.

The below is a brief stat:
• Rivers finished 69.9% of his passes (116-of-166) en route to a 112.5 QB rating
• He had thrown 12 TD passes and just 3 interceptions
• He has been ranked 2nd in the completion percentage to Matt Schaub (70.7) and in Quarter Back rating he is to Brett Favre (114.7)

Linebacker David Bowens said, “He’s a tough kid. He sits in the pocket and he’ll get his pass off. He sees pressure and he always seems to be on the same page with his receivers and tight end.”

He also added that apart from having two big wide outs and tight end Antonio Gates to throw to, Philip Rivers also checks down masterfully. He mentioned, “He’s 22 of 23 on his completions to the running backs,” said Bowens. “There’s been only one drop. That’s a lot of production.”

If we cross check the last 3 games of Philip Rivers, we get:
• Rivers finished over 75% of his passes and also he posted a 109 rating or even above this. It also includes a season-high 135.6 vs. Kansas City
• Rivers has also gone 58-of-75 for 693 yards having 5 TDs and not a single INTs for a combined passer rating of 127.3.

Norv Turner not impressed with Rivers’ completion percentage

Over the last three games Philip Rivers has completed 77.3% of his passes, but the head coach of Chargers, Norv Turner, is not impressed too much.

He said, “I’m not a big completion-percentage guy… I think if you’re in the high 50s, mid 60s — he’s in the low 70s (72 percent over the last five games) — I’m not sure that’s a big stat in terms of winning and losing. I’m sure it ties into it. But I think the big plays he makes, and the big plays our receivers make, have a much bigger effect on winning and losing.”

It is like that. If Norv Turner did not dial up so many big plays, then the completion percentage of Rivers would be even higher.

The 64.2 percent completion rate of Philip Rivers for the season includes 40 passes and these have traveled at least 21 yards in the air, that is the 10th-most in the league. Philip Rivers has completed 13 of those passes.

Philip Rivers said, “The last few weeks have been a bit uncharacteristic… It’s been unusually high, and I think that’s just the way things come up. The stuff that has come up had been more high percentage.”
